Mishimoto Mishimoto 06-08 VW/Audi Four Cylinder Ignition Coil Set

Ignition Coils for Optimal Engine Performance & Reliability

Ignition coils take 12 volts from the battery and step it up to the 30,000 to 60,000 volts your spark plugs need to fire under compression. When a coil weakens, the cylinder it feeds misfires under load, throws a P0301 through P0308 code, and drags fuel economy down. This collection stocks direct-fit OEM replacements and high-output performance coils for domestic, import, and JDM platforms.

Every coil here comes from a name the shop trusts. Granatelli Pro Series 60KV, MSD Blaster and Xtreme COP, aFe SCORCHER, Mishimoto Race Series, Cusco Type-2, HKS Super Fire Racing Coil Pro, and OE-quality Motorcraft, ACDelco, and Denso units, matched by year, engine, and coil style.

Coil-on-Plug, Coil Packs, and Cassette Coils

Modern engines run one of three ignition-coil layouts. Coil-on-plug (COP) mounts a dedicated coil on top of every plug, which is what you find on most trucks and performance cars built after roughly 2005. Coil pack systems drive two or four plugs from a single unit, common on older Ford Modular, GM 3800, and import fours. Cassette coils bolt across the valve cover as one long assembly, seen on inline sixes like the BMW N54 and some Volkswagen VR6 engines. This collection covers all three layouts.

Coil Categories in This Collection

OE Replacement Coils

Direct-fit coils that meet or exceed factory voltage output, resistance, and dwell specs. Motorcraft, ACDelco, Denso, NGK, Bosch, and Delphi units built for daily drivers, tow rigs, and stock horsepower where you just want the misfire gone and the code cleared.

High-Output Performance Coils

Coils that push secondary voltage 20 to 40 percent higher than stock to hold cylinder-to-cylinder consistency on boosted, nitrous, or high-compression builds. Granatelli 60KV Pro Series, MSD Blaster and Xtreme, aFe SCORCHER, and Ford Performance high-output coils all live in this tier.

Race-Level Coil Systems

Purpose-built ignition for high-boost, high-RPM, and forced-induction race platforms. HKS Super Fire Racing Coil Pro for RB26 and 2JZ, Cusco Type-2 for Subaru FA20/FA24/FB24, and complete coil-and-wire kits like the Granatelli Xtreme Coil-On-Plug Wire Conn Kit for Hemi 5.7, 6.1, and 6.4 engines.

How to Choose an Ignition Coil

  • Confirm engine year, displacement, and induction type (naturally aspirated, turbo, supercharged) before adding to cart.
  • Match coil style to the vehicle. COP, coil pack, and cassette coils are not interchangeable.
  • On boosted or tuned engines, step up to a high-output coil before chasing misfires with new plugs.
  • Replace all coils as a full set on high-mileage engines. One weak coil hides the next one about to fail.
  • Check primary resistance (typically 0.4 to 1.0 ohms) and secondary resistance (typically 5,000 to 15,000 ohms) when testing a suspect coil.
  • Inspect boot condition when swapping coils. A cracked boot leaks spark to the head and mimics a bad coil.

Common Questions

How do I know if an ignition coil is bad?

The most common signs are a cylinder-specific misfire code (P0301 through P0308), a shudder at idle or under load, rough acceleration, poor fuel economy, and a persistent check-engine light. Swap the suspect coil with a known-good coil from another cylinder. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil is failed.

Can I replace just one coil or should I do the whole set?

On a low-mileage engine, replacing the failed coil is fine. On engines over 80,000 miles, replacing the full set makes sense because the surviving coils are running at the same age and heat cycles as the failed one.

Do performance coils actually make more power?

On a healthy stock engine, no. On a modified engine (higher boost, higher compression, larger injectors, aggressive timing), the extra secondary voltage keeps the spark from being blown out under peak cylinder pressure. That prevents misfires rather than adding raw horsepower.

What is the difference between a coil pack and coil-on-plug?

Coil-on-plug puts one coil directly on top of every spark plug with no wire in between. Coil pack systems drive two or four plugs from one unit through spark plug wires. COP delivers a stronger, more consistent spark and is what almost every modern OEM uses.

Are aftermarket high-output coils safe on a stock ECU?

Yes for direct-fit units like Granatelli, aFe SCORCHER, and Mishimoto Race Series. They match the stock connector, dwell time, and primary resistance the factory ECU expects. Custom race coils or systems with different dwell requirements need tuning changes.

How long do ignition coils last?

Factory OE coils typically last 80,000 to 120,000 miles under normal use. Heat, oil leaks into the plug wells, and boost or nitrous shorten that lifespan. Modified turbo cars often see coil failures between 40,000 and 70,000 miles.

Will a bad coil damage the catalytic converter?

Yes if you ignore it. Unburned fuel from a misfiring cylinder dumps into the exhaust and superheats the catalyst. A steady P0301 through P0308 code for more than a few hundred miles is a common way to kill a cat.

Do I need to change spark plugs when I change coils?

If the plugs are near the end of their service interval, replace them at the same time. Fresh plugs give the new coils the correct gap and electrode geometry to work against. It also keeps the labor to one job on tight engine bays.

What torque spec do coil hold-down bolts use?

Most COP hold-down bolts land between 60 and 89 inch-pounds. Consult the factory service manual for the exact spec on your engine. Overtightening cracks the coil housing.

Can I use dielectric grease on the coil boot?

A light coat inside the boot where it meets the plug insulator is standard practice. It seals against moisture and keeps the boot from bonding to the plug over time. Do not pack the boot full or coat the metal terminal.
