Turbo Cartridges & CHRA Cores

A turbo cartridge, also called a CHRA (center housing rotating assembly), is the internal core of a turbocharger containing the turbine shaft, journal bearings or ball bearings, seal rings, and thrust bearing. Replacing the CHRA is a cost-effective turbocharger rebuild method that restores performance and oil sealing without replacing the turbine housing and compressor cover.

Popular Turbo Cartridge Applications

CHRA cartridges are available for a wide range of OEM and aftermarket turbocharger frames including Garrett, Borg Warner, IHI, Mitsubishi, and Holset turbos used in popular diesel and gasoline turbocharged applications. Ball bearing CHRA upgrades are available for many journal bearing turbo frames, offering faster spool response, reduced oil consumption, and longer service life than the original journal bearing assembly.

When should a turbo cartridge be replaced?

Turbo cartridge replacement is appropriate when inspection reveals shaft play exceeding manufacturer tolerances, worn or scored bearing surfaces, damaged seal rings causing oil burning, or turbine shaft imbalance from compressor wheel contact damage. Replacing only the CHRA saves the cost of a complete turbocharger when the housings are in acceptable condition, but requires careful inspection of compressor and turbine wheel tip clearances after assembly to confirm the housings are compatible with the new cartridge dimensions.

Can I install a turbo cartridge myself?

CHRA replacement requires disassembly of the turbocharger, careful cleaning of the housing bores, and correct torquing of the center housing bolts. The work is manageable for experienced mechanics with proper tools and service documentation. Pre-assembly of the new cartridge with clean oil and pre-lubrication before startup is essential to prevent dry-start bearing damage. If turbocharger balancing equipment is available, a balance check after assembly is recommended for high-performance applications.
