Crankshafts aftermarket parts and performance accessories

Performance Crankshafts — Forged & Stroker

Performance crankshafts in forged steel or billet chromoly replace OEM cast iron crankshafts in high-output engine builds where the increased torque and RPM demand exceeds the fatigue strength of the factory part. A forged or billet crankshaft is the foundation of any serious engine build, setting the stroke, connecting rod journal size, and ultimately the displacement and power potential of the entire rotating assembly.

Popular Upgrades

Stroker crankshafts for LS, small-block Chevy, small-block Ford, and Mopar applications are the most popular performance cranks, increasing engine displacement by extending the stroke beyond the factory specification. A 383 stroker crank for the 350 small-block Chevy and a 408 stroker crank for the 5.0 Ford are classic examples of displacement upgrades that provide significant torque increases without changing the engine block. Forged 4340 chromoly cranks rated for 1,000-plus horsepower are available for LS, LT, Coyote, and Hemi platforms for maximum-effort builds.

What is the difference between a cast and forged crankshaft?

Cast crankshafts are poured into molds and are adequate for stock power levels, but their grain structure does not resist tensile and fatigue loads as well as forged parts. Forged crankshafts use a hammered or pressed process that aligns the grain structure of the steel along the part geometry, producing significantly higher tensile strength and fatigue resistance. For any engine that will see boost, nitrous, or sustained high-RPM operation, a forged crank is the correct choice.

Do I need to balance an engine after installing a new crankshaft?

Yes, a full rotating assembly balance is essential after any crankshaft change. Even when replacing with the same part number, slight manufacturing variations require a professional balance to ensure smooth operation at all RPM. Stroker cranks with different stroke and counterweight dimensions especially require a complete balance of the crankshaft, rods, pistons, and flywheel as a matched assembly.
